The mantis stalks the cicada, unaware of the oriole behind (螳螂捕蟬,黃雀在後)
is a Chinese idiom which analogy that people can only see the interests, and regardless the dangers behind.
Nowadays with all the modern technology around us, everyone is being watched and labeled: Our life is surrounding by cameras and CCTV, everything we had done in public had been tracked, recorded and saved in the cameras. Our social network is also being watched, every post we share, every friend we make and every link we follow is tracked, recorded and converted into data by the Internet. All those data had been used to label us, for example, Advertisement companies predict our preferences by our gender, age and races. Customs judge you by your facial expression and might stop you just because they think your face looks "guilty," etc.
But honestly, can our face really represent our inner world? Can you really judge someone by just looking at his or her face?
"People from 'country name' are nice/rude..." "Women are sensitive/weak..."...
I believed everyone has the experience of being judged by your races or gender. Being a mixed-race woman myself, I personally had so many experiences of being given preferential and also being bullied because of my race and gender.
My video installation wants to remind people that a person's appearance does not represent his or her inner self and also the danger of those unknowing surveillances around us. We never know what people will do with these data..
